Self-care is more than just a buzzword, or a popular trend in our society today. Self-care is important for everyone. The problem is that most self-care books you will find are written for neurotypical and allistic (non-Autistic) people – until I found this book!
“Self-Care for Autistic People: 100+ Ways to Recharge, De-Stress, and Unmask!” by Dr. Megan Anna Neff is the book every Autistic adult should have on their bookshelf or easily accessible on their phone.
Dr, Neff, an Autistic person herself, has created a collection of more than 100 strategies that can be used for self-care for those of us adults on the spectrum.
The self-care activities are organized into categories including physical self-care, emotional self-care, mental self-care, social self-care and professional self-care.
Dr. Neff does an excellent job of covering every possible self-care need we as Autistic adults may need to address as well as sharing the signs we should watch out for that indicate we need to engage in self-care. She does it with compassion and without judgement while breaking down some of the causes that cause us to need to give ourselves some self-care along with suggestions for resources you can find on the internet that can help you engage in your own self-care.
Dr, Neff not only shares self-care strategies that you can do on a daily basis, she also includes techniques you can use when you need a quick dose of self-care when you are in a crisis such as a moment of social anxiety.
As an Autistic adult who talks about confidence, I can highly recommend this book to others.
